Only a half century ago, many citizens got their news from the Television (the earliest 2D type)  and Newspapers (printed on paper and sold daily). These major news outlets and also the information disseminated on the inchoate internet were controlled by  about a dozen large companies.  Although people were under the illusion that the Press (as it was called) was free, information was heavily censored. In essence, the citizens got just the information  that the Controlling Class (CC) wanted them to hear. Here are two such sources from the managed press: (incidentally all the agencies quoted are  defunct):

News as reported in the dominant economy by the corporate media and the ruling authorities.

News representing mainstream views five decades ago reported from a small nation aligned closely with the dominant economy

By 2007, fifty years ago, a rudimentary framework had been developed for the World Wide Web ( then called The Internet). Although there were attempts by the CC through legislation and economic strangulation to suppress adverse information, unfettered news were disseminated, by a few websites to an increasingly growing audience from the inchoate Internet. Because the corporate management vetted information adverse to their interest, these independent news sources were dubbed "Alternative News or Uncensored News".

The sites that published these were personned by few individuals acting on conviction and a sense of duty for the common good. Two such sources are linked here: (Note that the contents differ significantly from that reported by the corporate media)

Half a century ago, the major news items were centred on the parts of the World where wealth was concentrated. A huge percentage of the Biosphere's inhabitants were marginalised in terms of making news or receiving news. Attention was  focused on the people from these exploited regions only when they died in large numbers or a catastrophe befell them. About 80% of people in these regions could not read. However there were regional publications which concentrated on events specific to these areas. Here are two such news sources :
